Have you heard of Noah and the Whale?
I hope so, but if not, you should definitely look them up. They’re a British alternative rock band, and quite frankly, they’re way under-appreciated.

The above song is called “There Will Come a Time,” and it tells the a story of optimism. Reminding us that “there will come a time” in which everything will be just fine, the song has an irresistible positivity to it.
I didn’t discover it on my own in some revelatory moment. Instead, my sister, who also discovered Hozier when he only had 10,000 views ( that’s amazing), introduced me to Noah and the Whale about a year ago. In my opinion, they beautifully capture what it feels like to be young: anxious, full of desire, impatient. They haven’t done a tour in the U.S., and they just announced their split. BUT NOT TO FEAR! They have 42 amazing songs that can keep our thirst for great music quenched at least temporarily.
I think what I like most about their music is their timeless vibe. When this particular song starts, it feels sort of like the beginning of an 80s hair-band tune. Not to mention the perfect beating of the drums in the background. This song is a message of teenage independence; how we think we don’t need anyone but still yearn for human connection. For me personally, it’s a reminder that even when I feel distant from my peers, there will come a moment when everything works out again. It’s a reminder that we’re all human, and we take and give what we need/have when it is convenient for us, and while that may seem unfortunate, it means that we’re all going to need/be there for each other at some point eventually. We’re all on a continuum of mutual disposability, but we’re here together, and the fact that we need someone means someone else is bound to need us too.
It’s a love song. It’s a friendship song. It’s a song of optimism. It’s so great; I really can’t say much more about it.

As college apps consume our life, remembering that getting into “that” school or getting “that scholarship” is not everything is important. The song, to me, reassures that as long as you see things through, things will work out, it won’t necessarily be easy, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.
